Dolichopus notatus

Another common fly found around the patch so having become familiar with Dolichopodidae I thought I'd give it a go. Similar in appearance at first glance to Dolichopus ungulatus it differs by having pale post ocular hairs, so because of this I went through the keying out process reaching the conclusion of Dolichopus notatus.

Here is the keying out process:
1. Discale vein not forked
2. No antennal projection from segment 2 into segement 3
3. Acrostichal bristles present
15. Acrostichal bristles biserial
27. Costa without thickening
28. 1st antennal segment hairy
29. Hind coxa with 1 bristle at the apex
30. Hairless arista
31. Hind metatarsus with bristles
= Dolichopus

1. Yellow femora
3. Lower postoculars pale
19. All tarsi simple
31. Hind femur without fringe of long hairs beneath
39. Front tibia with 1 apicoventral bristle
40. Basal antennal segments normal, antennae not longer than head
41. Discal vein without a hang-vein
43. Genital lamella squamal fringe black (although the image below shows some pale fringing)
45. Brown face and apical fourth of hind tibia black

  1. Paul, you need to check this one, are you sure it has yellow lower postocular cilia?
